To play a carom game, you need two to four players. The essential equipment required for playing this game is carom board, 9 black colored coins, 9 white colored coins, a red colored coin queen and a striker. To start playing carrom, first, you need to place all the carrom coins i.e all the 19 coins including queen in the centre of carrom board. Now, with the help of the striker, you need to hit the coins. As there will be two teams, each team should select one colored coins either black or white. Each team should hit the coins of the color they chose. Also, it is very important to place the striker on correct angle so that you can aim it properly and hit it in the appropriate pocket. The best strategy of putting more coins in the pocket is to try playing the nearest coins rather than rushing behind the queen. The rule of placing the striker correctly is that you need to keep the striker within the circles which are situated at the end of the carom board baseline. These are the basic rules and things of playing carrom game. To start a game, one of the players of the team should break with the help of the index finger. Break means to hit the carom coins placed in between the board. After breaking, if the coin inserts the pocket, the same player gets another chance of playing. A player will get the chances till the time he or she pots the coins in the pocket and till the time he does not misses any coin. One the player misses to pot the coin in the pocket, the chance goes to the next player and in this way the games continues. One of the rules of playing carrom is that while potting the coin, the striker should not go in the pocket. If at all this happens, one coin of that team will be placed back in the centre of the board.
The red colored coin plays a very vital role in the carrom board game. You may hit the queen anytime after placing one of the coins in the pocket but it should be potted in the pocket before hitting the last coin. Once any of the team player hits the queen coin, he has to pocket one more coin of the chosen color. If he ails to do so, the queen coin will be placed back in the middle of the board. The winner of the game is the one who pots all the coins in the pocket first. Even if the queen is not pocketed and all the carom coins are potted in the pocket, the team wins the carom game.
