Replacement surgeries are quite a common feature in clinics all over USA. Knee operations are of two types; total and partial knee replacement. The former involves putting an implant on the entire knee area. On the other hand, a partial replacement takes place where there is a partial damage to the joint. Of all orthopedic medical procedures, replacements are the most common. This is due to its high success rate.

A total replacement surgery has an over 90% rate of success. Patients have reported a decrease of pain in the knee area after a successful operation. The implant material is mostly compatible and problems rarely arise. Due to the normal daily activities the replacement wears out but it can last for 15-20 years. This depends on your general health, nature of activities you engage in and your weight.

Post operative problems such as heart attacks or infections are quite minimal. However, the knee surgery is not without risks. Risks associated with replacement include, joint infection, damaged tissue and damage to key vessels that supply blood to the area. Some people react to any foreign thing, whereby the body totally rejects an implant. There is also the reaction to anesthesia. Bones and surrounding nerves can also be damaged.

The best way to tackle complications arising from replacement surgery is to have them treated immediately. You must be vigilant since infections in the sinuses, urinary or respiratory tracts can easily be spread to the treated knee through the bloodstream. Should the implant be rejected, your doctor may be able to recommend a replacement. You are advised to maintain regular visits to the doctor for check-up.

The recovery process following a successful knee operation takes time. Upon being discharged, you will be put into a therapy program which you will attend 2-3 times each week. Replacement exercises both at the hospital and at home help the implant to fit into place and combine with other surrounding tissue. Therapy may take up to 2 months and can last for up to 6 months. However, a good exercise regime is the key to healing.

Following knee surgery, you are limited to some activities. After replacement, some exercises must be avoided. These include jogging, running and some sporting activities that involve contact. Before an implant is chosen, the doctor carries out compatibility tests. At some point, doctors may consider alternative treatment like therapy or injections. Your doctor should guide and advice on this. The extent of pain coupled with damage to the part determines how soon surgery may take place.

A total replacement is necessary where a patient complains of persistent pain in the knee. In some cases, you may find it difficult to walk or totally unable to go about your work. An implant alleviates pain and suffering. Once in a while a patient may initiate a lawsuit against the manufacturer for an improper implant. In such a lawsuit, the surgeon may also be conjoined especially where he/she is required to show that due diligence was followed. Despite such shortcomings knee operations continue to be ranked as some of the medical procedures with high success rate.
