Zirconyl chloride is a water soluble mineral compound that is derived from zirconium. Zirconium is a mineral metal that occurs naturally in the earth and sea water. It can be mined from the earth or distilled out of the sea water to be used in many different commercial applications. It is typically a soft crystallized powder when it is extracted. The most common uses are in the dying process dealing with textiles or oilfield acidizing.

There are several different combinations of minerals that are used in oilfield acidizing but one of the most popular is Zirconyl chloride. The main purpose of using it is because of the way in which it is able to stabilize the clay soil after an oil well is drilled. This means that it helps keep the clay from collapsing so the oil well can be stimulated or rejuvenated by using other chemical compounds.

Rejuvenating an oil well typically allows the oil well to continue producing oil from the same well for a longer period of time than normal. This in turn saves the company money because they can continue to make more money without having to drill a new well in order to get oil production. Each time an oil well is drilled the person that is paying for it takes a chance of drilling an oil well that is dry. If the well is dry then the owner will lose money because they still have to pay for the expenses that are involved in the drilling process.

Zirconyl Chloride is also a common ingredient which is used in the dying process of textiles. The main purpose of it is to help set the dye by causing it to bond to the fibers in the material and dry faster. When the dye dries faster it helps keep it from washing out of the fabric when it gets wet. This allows a person to wash their clothes without worrying about the dye washing out during the process and staining other articles of clothing that are in the same load of laundry.
