Almost every person in the world has had some sort of contact with film and movies in their lifetime. If you are a film enthusiast you may even have envied some famous actresses, producers and directors. The entire process of creating a movie is called film production.

Many specialist skills come together in what can often be a highly stressful - but rewarding - endeavor. The film industry is all about collaboration. Scriptwriters, actors, sound specialists, cameramen, special effects technicians, costume designers and set designers - to name just a few of the roles involved in recording the film. Many of the “on-set” roles are appended with the title ‘operator’. This includes sound operators and film operators.

Once the film and sound have been collected the post-production team works to ensure that the final product is cut and edited to the best of their ability. Film editors have the arduous task of sequencing the recorded film into smaller portions in the most effective way to tell the story. Some roles will be as small as creating the title and end sequences whilst other larger tasks involve sound mixing to balance sound with the visuals or adding computer special effects.

The director guides the film production process from beginning to end and usually contributes the most to the quality of the final movie. This highly coveted job is not one that is easy to train for as it requires an individual to know a little bit about every aspect of producing a film whilst being able to hold on to his or her own unique vision for the project. Very few film schools actually focus on solely teaching directing skills but there are some out there that will allow you to envision the role of the director. Becoming a director has a lot to do with being a driven person with a wide range of talents and practical hands-on experience. That being said, in order to succeed with a film career you also need to be a very determined and hard-working person regardless of your role.

To be really good in this field it is quite necessary for you to attend a film school that focuses on a good mix of practical and theoretical skills. In such a school, you can decide whether you want to get a PHD, masters, a degree or a diploma. It all depends with how specialized you want to be in that field. However, a school does not create creativity. It only helps you to use your own creativity to the best possible end result. Many people are also surprised by the amount of technical ability required in many roles the film industry. Discovering the skillset that provides the right mix of creative and technical ability for you is the first step to finding your niche. Some film schools will provide opendays or provide introductory short courses to certain fields such as scriptwriting, audio engineering or even the overall film production process.

There are also certain advantages to finding people in the industry with the same disposition as yourself. Encouraging collaboration and knowledge-share helps you to work on the sorts of projects you will enjoy as well as allowing you to find kindred artistic spirits. This approach will guarantee success in your film career in the long run. After all, isn’t it the job that you most enjoy that you succeed in?
